New mobile MRI enhances access to medical imaging for people on the Sunshine Coast
People living in or near Sechelt are benefiting from a new mobile magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) unit, based in their community, in times when it is needed.

The new unit will increase access to vital diagnostic imaging services in the communities they are based in, while allowing hospitals to book them to support capacity during renovations, replacements or upgrades.
The Province of B.C., through the Provincial Health Services Authority, has invested $5.3 million into the design, construction and deployment of these new mobile units.
Since Nov. 8, 2024, the mobile MRI unit based out of Sechelt | shíshálh Hospital has supported more than 230 patients, and depending on deployment schedules, could perform up to 3,265 exams each year reducing the need to travel for this service. Now, when the mobile MRI unit is at its home hospital, patients can access these services closer to home.
Provincial investment in medical imaging
Since 2017, the province has invested over $1 billion to enhance and protect health care, ensuring health-care services are accessible to everyone in B.C. both now and in the future. This substantial investment has supported advancements in diagnostic imaging services, aimed at reducing wait-times and addressing staff shortages by adding 19 new MRI and 11 new CT units across the province, as well as extending operating hours and staffing levels.
